The Sugar Bowl Hitory

The Sugar Bowl is an annual American college football bowl game played in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Sugar Bowl has been played annually since January 1, 1935, and celebrated its 75th anniversary on January 2, 2009. The Sugar Bowl, along with the Orange Bowl and Sun Bowl, are the second-oldest bowl games in the country, behind the Rose Bowl (first played 1902, played annually since 1916). The Sugar Bowl is also a member of the Bowl Championship Series. Presently, its official title is the Allstate Sugar Bowl after its current sponsor.

The Sugar Bowl hosted the BCS National Championship Game in 2000 and 2004. However, since the 2006 season, the BCS National Championship Game has been a stand-alone event one week following the New Year's Day bowl games (including the Sugar Bowl). Under the current BCS format, the Sugar Bowl itself will not host the BCS National Championship Game, but the Superdome will be one of the four rotating stadiums used to host the BCS National Championship Game.

The 2012 Sugar Bowl Game (known via sponsorship as the Allstate Sugar Bowl) will be a postseason college football bowl game on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game will be played between the #13 Michigan Wolverines and the #11 Virginia Tech Hokies. The Sugar Bowl Committee overlooked the higher ranked #7 Boise State Broncos and #8 Kansas State Wildcats, opting to give the At-Large bids to the Wolverines and Hokies instead.

This will be the first Sugar Bowl since 2000, as well as only the sixth since World War II and the tenth overall, not to feature a Southeastern Conference team. The Sugar Bowl normally has the first pick of SEC teams. However, since Alabama and LSU were selected for the 2012 BCS National Championship Game, no other SEC team was eligible for a BCS bid. Under current BCS rules, only two teams per conference are eligible. (From : Wikipedia)
